Olifantsberg Family Vineyards, nestled in the Breedekloof Wine Valley of the Western Cape, South Africa, is renowned for producing wines that authentically reflect their unique terroir. The estate is situated on the fertile slopes of the Brandwacht Mountain Range, with vineyards ranging from 250m to 450m above sea level. This elevation, combined with significant diurnal temperature variations and strong winds, contributes to the slow ripening of grapes, resulting in wines with freshness and elegance. The region’s diverse soils, including shale Renosterveld with schist and slate components, further enhance the complexity of the wines.
The winemaking philosophy at Olifantsberg emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes to shine. Each vineyard batch is vinified separately, ensuring that the unique qualities of each variety are preserved. This approach leads to wines that are expressive, balanced, and true to their origin
3btls x OLIFANTSBERG The Matriarch 2021 W.O. Breedekloof R330 per bottle
Elizma Visser nurtures the vineyards and vinifies their fruit, with husband Ferdi, carefully, intricately and gently, using natural ferments and a variety of concrete and oak vessels. This excellent blend represents the culmination of all the signature Olifantsberg traits. Roussanne, being the predominant component in this blend at 72%, shows the ultimate complexity we can achieve with this variety on the farm. However, Grenache blanc and Chenin Blanc complement Roussanne extremely well to create the perfect blend. “Alluring aromatics of citrus peel, white blossoms, some waxy character and spice. Intense, multilayered wine that is round and textured with tangy acidity and a savoury finish. Serve with bold flavoured fish such as yellowtail.” – Caroline Rillema
3btls x OLIFANTSBERG Soul of the Mountain Syrah 2019 W.O. Breedekloof R195 per bottle
Elizma Visser and her husband Ferdi nurture the vineyards and vinifiy their fruit, carefully, intricately and gently, using natural ferments and a variety of concrete and oak vessels. Their red wines represent the culmination of all the signature Olifantsberg traits. The Syrah is grown as echalas vines (stok by paaltjie) as well as trellised vines on clay-shale rich soil with a high component of quartz rock. The Syrah plantings are situated at 300m to 470m above sea-level. The cooler meso-climate of the traditional echalas has a higher acidity and a different aromatic complexity than the trellised vines. Careful clone selection has allowed for complexity and flavour perfection. “This wine, on its plateau of peaking, delivers an array of flavours of red and dark current berries, sweet aromas of violets, liquorice and pepper. The palate is refined with perfect balance. Drink now, with venison or lamb stew.” – Caroline Rillema
