Ormonde Private Cellar is situated on the West Coast of South Africa, where the rugged Darling hills roll and fall along the contours of an ancient granite intrusion. These molten rocks, forced from the earth to 300m above sea level, guard the Atlantic Ocean while banks of fog bless the vineyard with coolness and moisture.
Owned by the Basson family, current winemaker and viticulturist, Theo Basson, embraces the legacy left to him by his father Nico and his grandfathers before him. The appreciation for accumulated knowledge and attention to detail are principles Theo vows to when asked about the various accolades Ormonde has been awarded.
The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning from dry land vineyards. The constant gentle breeze from the cool Atlantic Ocean a mere 6km away, with sufficient warmth from the sun through midday, allows for optimum slow ripening conditions for intense red fruit flavours and vibrant red colour.
