Paul Wallace, a viticultural consultant with over 30 years experience, purchased an Elgin farm with his wife Nicky in 2003. With a strong belief in the potential of the cool-climate Elgin region, they replaced the orchards with vineyards, creating 12 new hectares of vines. They have been producing the Black Dog Malbec since 2004 and from 2013 have expanded their wine range. This is a family affair with sons, Mark and Bobby, involved in the farm and also starting their own wine project together
The 2020 Paul Wallace Black Dog Malbec is the eleventh vintage made from grapes produced on our own farm, Wallovale Vineyards. It is named after Jake, Paul’s beefy black shadow, a cross Labrador/Rottweiler, who was a puppy when we bought the farm in 2003. Jake is sadly no longer with us but two black labs, Angus and Becky, continue the legacy. The Malbec grape is also known as the Black Grape and it is this characteristic that has been incorporated into the name.
