Piekenierskloof Carel van Zyl Old Vine Grenache Noir 2023

In 1923 Johan Abraham van Zyl and his wife, Wilhelmina, settled on the undeveloped, rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof. Some forty years later, in 1962, their son, Carel van Zyl, planted some of the first vineyards in the Piekenierskloof. Today the fourth generation of van Zyl’s celebrates their heritage with unique wines made from meticulously farmed and lovingly managed vines, some more than sixty years old. Fondly dubbed the ‘Grenache HQ’ amongst wine lovers, the Piekenierskloof not only boasts one of the largest Grenache plantings in the Cape, but its extensive collection of old, unirrigated bush vine vineyards have stood the test of time and continuously deliver exceptional wines.

With its vibrant orange top reflecting the Dutch origin of their name and the region’s citrus farming history; and the Piekenier (pike-bearing old-time soldier) showcased on each label, their wines clearly embody all that they stand for: new beginnings, family legacy and history, plentiful harvest, enjoying the fruits of their labour, peace and liberty.
