In 1923 Johan Abraham van Zyl and his wife, Wilhelmina, settled on the undeveloped, rugged mountain ridge of the Piekenierskloof. Some forty years later, in 1962, their son, Carel van Zyl, planted some of the first vineyards in the Piekenierskloof. Today the fourth generation of van Zyl’s celebrates their heritage with unique wines made from meticulously farmed and lovingly managed vines, some more than sixty years old. Fondly dubbed the ‘Grenache HQ’ amongst wine lovers, the Piekenierskloof not only boasts one of the largest Grenache plantings in the Cape, but its extensive collection of old, unirrigated bush vine vineyards have stood the test of time and continuously deliver exceptional wines.
Piekenierskloof Grenache Rosé is vinified from mature vineyards growing on the Piekenierskloof plateau.
Wilhelmina, their ‘courageous protector’, was the driving force behind Johan Abraham van Zyl’s conquering of the wild Piekenierskloof in the early 1900s. Her brave spirit as matriarch of their pikeman lineup is honoured with this very rare and special Grenache Noir Méthode Cap Classique.
