The Mataro, Grenache and Alicante components of this wine, are sourced from a small block on the Northern side of Eden Valley near the township of Keyneton. The vineyard itself is rather unusual with a range of rich red earth and more shallow friable dirt interspersed with gray brown podzolic soil. Planted on the contour and taking advantage of these mixed patches of soil – each row is a smorgasboard of cultivars. Some rows are solely Mataro, others start with Grenache and finish with Alicante. For the unseasoned picker it can be a challenge, but for old hands, it’s a joy to be in this quirky vineyard.
The grapes are all handpicked into 350kg bins, keeping each variety separate. Each batch is then treated as an individual wine from the outset. Crushed, and left to ferment for 8 – 10 days with morning and evening pumpovers to extract both colour, flavour and to aerate the wine. Gently basket pressed then matured in a combination of old and new French hogheads for 18 months. The base wine is finally blended and returned to barrel for a few more months, until bottling.
This gem of a vineyard, although fairly young by the districts standards (10+ years) continues to amaze us with it’s ability to produce really interesting & fascinating fruit. Working closely with the grower over the past few seasons, has allowed us to have input into growing & pruning techniques to further realise the potential of this eclectic vineyard. The 2010 vintage was a stunner and particularly remarkable for excellent quality reds – an exciting prospect as these wines age. A blend of Mataro (40%), Grenache (30%) Alicante (20%) and Shiraz (10%) has created an earthy spiciness with layers of ripe red berry fruits, particularly morello cherries and hints of cedar and oriental spices.
“… our life is all about flavour”
A chef and a winemaker forge a partnership based on good food, great wine and a belief in doing the right thing….
Before moving back to the Barossa in 2002, Radford Wines began 11 years ago in Stellenbosch, South Africa after Ben had left his Barossa roots to work various vintages in France, Canada & finally South Africa. There he spent 7 years heading up a dynamic young winery and refining the skills that he’d learnt in Australia, Burgundy, The Rhone & Niagara Peninsula.
During this time, whilst studying at the Institute of Culinary Arts in Stellenbosch, South Africa, Gill met Ben when their paths crossed, over a bottle of Shiraz. This auspicious meeting would prompt their move back to the Barossa & most importantly the Eden Valley and what would eventually become their vineyard property.
They were determined to embrace the land and input as much as they could to create a viable, sustainable environment. Since then they have produced Riesling from the old vines on their property planted in the 1930s– the first vintage in 2003 was under the Radford Dale label. Shiraz followed shortly in 2004. Now producing wine solely under their “Radford” label, their aim and focus has been refined in the last few years. This includes a stronger more powerful commitment in their belief of “textural & flavourful” wines. Hand made in every sense of the word, and with an unwavering emphasis on terroir, these site specific vineyards produce lovely supple wines of elegance & integrity.
