“78% Syrah, 13% Grenache, 7% Carignan and 2% Cinsault. Matured for 12 months in older 225- and 300-litre barrels. Red and black berries, floral perfume, fynbos and a little undergrowth on the nose. Medium bodied with fresh acidity fine tannins. Balanced and lightly dry on the finish. Very appealing with a nice crunchy quality to it.” – CE 94/100

Rall wines was established in 2008 and is owned and run by young independent winemaker Donovan Rall. After graduating with a viticulture and oenology degree from Stellenbosch University in 2005 and extensive travels and harvests around the world over the next few years, Donovan returned to South Africa in 2007 for a season in the Swartland. Here he found his inspiration for the Mediterranean varietals and now makes boutique wines under his own label from old vineyards in the Swartland and Stellenbosh. Donovan started out by focussing on just two wines – a white and a red. With fruit sourced from various vineyard sites, these remain the Rall Wines flagships. The winemaking is simple, with each parcel allowed to ferment and mature naturally before blending in a renovated cellar in the Swartland.
