Rall wines was established in 2008 and is owned and run by young independent winemaker Donovan Rall. After graduating with a viticulture and oenology degree from Stellenbosch University in 2005 and extensive travels and harvests around the world, Donovan returned to SA in 2007 for a season in the Swartland. Here he found his inspiration for the Mediterranean varietals and now makes boutique wines under his own label from old vineyards in the Swartland and Stellenbosh. The winemaking is simple, with each parcel allowed to ferment and mature naturally before blending in a renovated cellar in the Swartland.
“This blend of Chenin Blanc 72%, Verdelho 24% and Viognier 4% now in its 15th vintage is possibly my favourite to date. Grapes grown mainly in the granitic soils of the Paardeberg and now also containing a big portion of fruit from the vineyard used for Noa this 2022 is certainly the most focused and age worthy white in this years release. All components fermented naturally and matured separately in a combination of 2000 litre foudre, seasoned small French oak and concrete eggs before blending and bottling after 10 months.”
