Scion refers to the top life bearing parts of a plant/vine or can also mean ‘the descendant of’. Sinai refers to ‘Sinai Hill’ – a granite hill in the lower Helderberg region south of Stellenbosch towards False Bay. Bernhard Bredell used these words to create the name ‘Scions of Sinai’ which is also applicable given that he is a 7th generation (descendant) of Bredell wine farmers from this area.
Scions of Sinai Wines focus on curating some uniquely located vineyards of the Lower Helderberg region from low yielding dry-farmed bushvines on silica rich decomposed granite soils barely 4km from the cold South Atlantic shoreline (False Bay). Uncompromised wines with an obsessive attention to detail for terroir influences and a deep passion for heritage.
Scions of Sinai favours skilful and sensitive agriculture decisions on the basis of organics. Mindful towards natural processes that requires a hands-on approach in the vines with a chemical and additive free approach in the cellar. Manipulation free and honest wines, that are given the opportunity to express their site, unfiltered and unfined. Natural fermentations with wild yeast strains occurring from each vineyard lends a pure and complex identity.
A ‘Terroir’ mindset – with obsessive attention to the finer details each vintage naturally wants to express.
From Sinai Hill, southern Stellenbosch. An old Chenin blanc single vineyard from 1978. Planted on South-East facing contours as dry-farmed bush vines rooted on weathered in-situ granite soils. Overlooking the shores of False Bay a mere 3.5km away. Aged in a larger format concrete egg-shaped vessel on its fermented fine lees for nine months.
