MERWIDA Pinot Grigio 2022 R100 per bottle
The fertile soils of the Breede River Valley near Rawsonville have been home to the Van der Merwe Family and Merwida Winery since 1844. Located at the foot of the Du Toitskloof Mountains along the Holsloot River their vineyards stretch over 800 hectares, making Merwida one of the largest private cellars in South Africa. Rare in South Africa, the Pinot Grigio grape originates from NE Italy. True to type, this wine exudes freshness and deep minerality with a certain wet stone character and hints of freshly blanched almonds on the palate. Crisp and dry with a haunting depth – one of the best examples of this grape made locally. Serve with freshly caught linefish and
light chicken dishes.
TIERHOEK Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2019 R222 per bottle
Tierhoek was established as a farm in 1886 and is one of the oldest surviving, original Sandveld farms on the WestCoast of Africa. This 715ha farm was owned by the Marais family from 1886 to 2001, and is presently owned by Shelly Sandell and her family. Just seven x 300L barrels are made each year from this Old Vine block, planted in 1977. It has a penetrating aroma of bottled quince and just-ripe mango, followed by a fleshy flavour abounding invibrancy and racy acidity. A thrilling wine – it’s no wonder some of the most famous wine makers buy fruit from this block. It will pair perfectly with young cheeses and of course a light butter chicken curry.
STONY BROOK Camissa 2020 R125 per bottle
In 1995 Nigel and Joy McNaught purchased an old fruit farm in Franschhoek. This property is now known as Stony Brook. They replanted the entire farm to vines and built a small cellar in which to produce the first wines under the Stony Brook label. In 2011, the owners were joined by their son, Craig McNaught, who took over the reigns as winemaker. This is a super Bordeaux-style blend, made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Each component was matured for 24 months in second-and-third-fill French oak barriques. Deep, ripe fruit aroma, redolent of Rowntree’s black and red fruit pastilles! Refined and vertical, thanks to the Cabernets’ structure, it is also smooth and rounded. Drinking well now, it will pair well with a good ribeye steak.
KLEINHOEKKLOOF Shiraz 2020 R172 per bottle
Kleinhoekkloof is an award-winning family owned boutique wine and olive farm safely ensconced within the Langeberg Mountain range. Handcrafted wines are created here – wines that also reflect the superb quality of the fruit sourced from tiny wisps of vineyard. The farm has a rich heritage – spanning a century and more, and was
acquired by the de Jongh family in 2004. This vintage shows balanced spice, some oak and dark berries on the nose. The palate is an array of concentrated pepper and cardamom backed by the characteristic Kleinhoekkloof perfume. It is a focused and balanced wine with supple tannins and a well-rounded finish. Pairing suggestion:
Hearty red meat dishes like bobotie, oxtail and lamb.
