Stellenzicht’s vineyards and winery is nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. The 218 hectare property has been owned by Baron Hans von Staff-Reitzenstein since 2017. Branding is inspired by geology and soil science, emhasising the imortance of the steeply sloping terrain on the Helderberg mountainside, where vineyards have been revitalised and replanted, and new ones established. As custodians of this beautiful farm, they believe in protecting their natural resources through sustainable farming. This is most prevalently seen by the return of the dragonfly population on the farm. ‘This highly adaptive creature symbolizes our future: we adapt when needed in pursuit of balance.’
The Thunderstone Red gets its name from the stone age hand axe found on the farm. People believed that the these were the result of lightning striking the soil and shaping the rocks. The Dutch called them ‘Dondersteentjies’.
