Talana Hill was established in 1988 and won first prize in the World Wine Auction for its Chardonnay that same year. From 2007 until 2021, the vineyard was under the stewardship of Vriesenhof Vineyards and award-winning winemaker Jan Boland Coetzee, but was purchased by Doug and Carolyn Smollan in 2021. 2022 saw the production of their first vintage by new winemaker Adam Mason.
Talana Hill Chardonnay 2022
R604.00
Region: Stellenbosch
Tasting note:
“Stellenbosch property Talana Hill was established in 1988 under the stewardship of Vriesenhof’s Jan Boland Coetzee. It was acquired by Doug and Carolyn Smollan in 2021, and 2022 saw the production of their first Chardonnay by Adam Mason working out of the Vriesenhof cellar.
Matured for 10 months in one new 228-litre barrel and one neutral 225-litre barrel, the nose shows citrus, struck-match reduction, vanilla and toasted nuts. The palate is rich but not sweet with seemingly moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. It’s an ambitious wine that currently appears a bit “chunky” and unyielding but may settle with time.” – CE
