‘One of those wines that stops you in your tracks, this is a beautifully weighted Chardonnay from Bokkeveld shale soil. Fermented in 25% new wood with no malolactic, it’s a seamless cocktail of the CY 76, 95 and 96 clones with lots of texture, notes of cashew nut and lemon butter and supporting, refreshing acidity and minerality. ‘The 2021 Thamnus Chardonnay is powerful and sleek. Notes of cool citrus, almond paste and peach flirt on the nose, combined with fragrant spice. The body is rich and textured, offering pure lemon and lime, supported by finely balanced French oak. The firm acidity carries the powerful fruit and an elegant long, sumptuous finish. Thamnus Wines is a new label located between Calitzdorp and Hermanus, just outside the Hemel-en-Aarde valley with a focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. PJ Geyer heads up the winemaking, previously making great wines for Alan Moueix’s venture in Stellenbosch called Ingwe.
