John Seccombe and co-owner and wife Tasha founded Thorne & Daughters winery just over ten years ago. They chose ‘Thorne’ to label the winery because it is John’s middle name, linked to the family for some four centuries, and the theme of childhood play for the names of the wines, suggestive of the sense of purity in their flavours and the lack of artifice in their making. This happens in the Gabriëlskloof cellar in the Overberg, using grapes from sites across the winelands and a ‘simple, honest and gentle’ approach, the goal being ‘putting together old vineyard parcels with new grape varieties, and making wines with old-school simplicity and a modern edge, that tell a story of the Cape of Good Hope’.
Thorne & Daughters Cat’s Cradle Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023
R443.00
Region: Swartland
Tasting note:
“Grapes predominantly from the Paardeberg. Elusive aromatics of pear, peach, soft citrus and hay. The palate is nicely weighted – not as austere as some examples of the variety from the area. Fine and detailed – pure fruit, well-integrated acidity and a gently savoury finish.” – CE 96pts
“This is a very clear and bright expression of Chenin blanc, with aromas of Chinese pear, yellow apple, and lime leaves. A rich, beeswaxy palate is full of salty almonds, light honey and elderflower. The finish is long, textured and pithy. This is a wine that will reward some time in the cellar to allow its full aromatic expression to develop.” – Winemaker
