Tokara is a family-owned vineyard and derives its name from the founders’ children, Thomas and Kara. The farm forms the watershed between two beautiful valleys on the foothills of the majestic Simonsberg mountain, resting on the Stellenbosch side of the Banghoek Valley, between 350m and 550m above sea level. The combination of altitude, deep, rich, decomposed granite soils and the unique aspect of the property make for exciting variability between the vineyard sites.
Their Highlands vineyard lies south of Stellenbosch in Elgin, a cool-climate area atop Sir Lowry’s Pass. Soils are predominantly Table Mountain sandstone which imparts an ethereal scent to their Sauvignon Blanc and Cap Classique sparkling wine.
At Tokara, the focus is on two of the greatest grape varieties in the world – Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, reflected in their three ranges: Tokara Premium Collection, a fusion from various sites; Tokara Reserve Collection, picked from a single vineyard; and Tokara Directors Reserve, produced from the best and most expressive parcels on the highest slopes of Tokara’s Stellenbosch property.

This 100% Chardonnay is made from grapes grown on Tokara’s Stellenbosch farm. The soils are all Oakleaf from granitic origin with varying levels of Sandstone boulders in the profile. It is a deep clay rich soil, with gravelly elements. The slopes vary between south-east to north-west aspects at altitudes between 300m – 360m above sea level. The wine was bottled in December 2021 and will age beautifully for at least a decade.
