“This wine has a deep almost black core with a purple rim. The nose leads with notes of whole purple fig, cigar box, salted liquorice and violet perfume. The palate is classy and refined with rich dark fruit and a silky mid-palate. The wine leaves one with an appealing chalky finish and subtle hint of red pepper kernel.” – Winemaker

Tokara was purchased in 1994 by GT Ferreira for residential purposes, but it wasn’t long before the great potential for planting vineyards was recognised inspiring the planting of classic varietals on the 400m above sea-level slopes. The cool air and low temperatures contribute to the excellent quality of Tokara Wines. Situated on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg mountain with views over False Bay to Table Mountain, this family-owned vineyard derives its name from the founders’ children, Thomas and Kara. The combination of altitude, deep, rich, decomposed granite soils and the unique aspect of the property makes for exciting variability between the vineyard sites.
The grapes for the Reserve Collection Syrah, Tokara’s most expressive Syrah, comes from two Syrah clones, planted on a single vineyard block on the farm. The wine is barrel fermented, matured on the gross lees for ten months and is then aged for a further eleven months in French oak barrels.
