“The Series M 2021 possesses a regal, dignified character. Beautifully nuanced, showing an attractive tension and energy. It displays a great density of red to black colour and magenta-tinged rim. Seductive aromas of cranberry and ripe cherry fluently segue to lush notes of black raspberry, blueberry and subtle dried thyme, owing to the Merlot and Malbec components of this blend. Lifted rose petal, blonde tobacco, cacao and warm orange rind add layers of complexity. ” – Winemaker

“Is wine art? Chris de Vries of Vilafonté is inclined to think so, viewing wine “a composition” in the sense of being a creative work. De Vries, who joined the high-profile Paarl property in October 2016, has bought a deft touch to bear and has clearly made the most of all the celebrated 2021 vintage had to offer. The Cab-driven Seies C 2021 (R1,990 a bottle) rated 96 when it came to market last year, and now the Series M 2021 has been released. This vintage of Series M sees Merlot to the fore at 41% followed by 35% Malbec, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc while maturation lasted 22 months in 225-litre barrels, of which 26% were new. Alcohol: 14%. The nose is fragrant showing red berries plus subtle notes of violets, potpourri and dried herbs while the palate is refined and seamless – succulent fruit, vibrant acidity and fine, densely packed tannins, the finish gently savoury. Founded in 1997, this forty-two hectare estate on the bench of the Simonsberg Mountains with its unique vilafontes
soils, served as the fuse to their vision.  Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec confirmed its affinity to the ancient soils, dated as being somewhere between 750 000 and 1.5 million years old.  Planted at high density, these vines adhere to the exquisite struggle; encouraging smaller vines, lower yields and highly concentrated fruit. Vilafonté wines are exclusively from grapes grown on their property. The cooling maritime influence has created a Mediterranean climate – wet and cold winters, paired with long dry summers that create an extremely favourable environment for the production of fine wine.
Vilafontes soils are one of the oldest documented soil types. A unique defining characteristic of this site is the presence of stone age cutting tools. The origin of these stone tools have been attributed to a branch of human evolution called Homo ergaster (meaning “the working man”), between 1.4 million and 1.9 million years ago. Remarkably, as these tools were found on the surface of the soil, it confirms the fact that the region has never experienced glaciation, volcanic disturbances or more recent sedimentary deposits, which have left the top soils undisturbed for millennia. These healthy but nutrient deficient soils cradle the vines into producing wines driven by character, purity and refinement with a perfect tension ubiquitous to each vintage produced.
