Since Briton Paul Boutinot bought Waterkloof in 2004, 90 hectares have been planted with vines on windswept Schapenberg Hill overlooking False Bay. Fynbos covers the remainder of the 189 hectare estate. Conservation-minded Waterkloof Estate unlocks nature’s true potential with elegant wines of great complexity and uncompromised quality, shaped by an Amphitheatre of bio-dynamically farmed vineyards on the outskirts of Somerset West.
The wine range is headed by the flagship Waterkloof range, a label reserved for single vineyards which offer something extraordinary. This Sauvignon Blanc epitomises the estate’s goal of producing truly fine, world class wines. It is made in limited quantities from two windswept blocks at the top of the Schapenberg and is only released in exceptional vintages.
Professor Perold’s creation, Pinotage, was propagated at Elsenburg College in 1935. In 1941 Myrtle Grove on the Schapenberg was chosen for the first commercial plantings. Today only one block remains on the Schapenberg – The Last of The First. Completely different in style to inland Pinotage. Elegant, perfumed, graceful – pinotage as it was originally intended?
