Welgegund, our 35ha farm, tucked away at the foot of the Hawequa mountain range, on the road known as ‘the horseshoe’, has a historic pedigree. Established in 1777, Welgegund was once owned by Cecil John Rhodes, as one of the best farms in the Boland and was eventually consolidated after his death into Rhodes Fruit Farms. It is as a wine farm though that Welgegund has truly come into its own – unique hand crafted wines since it’s first bottling decades ago. This proud winemaking heritage continues to inspire us in our quest to craft wines of origin and distinction. Since new ownership took over in 2014, the range now consists of a Rhone style blend of Shiraz, Cinsault and Carignan, Chenin Blanc, Single Vineyard Cinsault and Grenache Noir.
Blessed with an ideal climate, beautiful landscape, and exceptional light, at Welgegund we seek to produce authentic wines which celebrate the unique characteristics of our farm. Our passion for the land and it’s produce inspires our lifestyle and the joie de vivre we bring to our wine making.
We believe that our remarkable wines are a reflection of the unique fingerprint of terror and climate that define Welgegund. The decomposed granite of the Hawequa foothills often stresses our vines encouraging them to produce intensely flavored fruit ideal for creating the very best wines. The breezes funneling down the valley from the Du Toit’s Kloof Pass moderate the extremes of the climate. This expression of land and climate lays the foundation for our wines which will always articulate this very special place.
The variety of cultivars on the farm is testament to the individual character of each vineyard, described by their aspect, slope and wind exposure. Our dedication to these special features in developing each vineyard block, allows us to grow cultivars uniquely suited to the fingerprint of our farm.
