The woman behind Wolf & Woman Wines is Jolandie Fouché. A few years ago, Jolandie’s husband sent her a quote that he said reminded him of her. It read: “Some days I am more wolf than woman and I am still learning how to stop apologizing for my wild.” A while later, after reading the book Women who run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, she felt inspired and empowered to dream bigger and wilder than every before and decided to turn her attention to her passion project: Wolf & Woman Wines.
Her small, boutique winery focuses on discovering the magic of the old vines in the Swartland (and certain beautiful pockets of the Voor-Paardeberg and Piekenierskloof) that provide an exceptional expression of the schist, granite and iron soils in which they grow. As shared custodians of the lands that house these vineyards, she partners with growers who farm sustainably in order to produce top-quality grapes without compromising the environment, and the vineyards themselves.
Wolf & Woman Syrah is a blend from two different vineyards that grow in red, iron-rich soils and schist soils respectively, to showcase the diverse soils of the Swartland. The vines are an average of twenty-five years old. The wine was aged for ten months in 300L and 500L seasoned oak barrels.
